HeY, I'm Jess, the artist of Pop Art Puppy Dogs!
A dog's life burns brightly and far too quickly; they are always in the moment with us and bring such joy to our lives. I unleash them in a burst of colour and energy that pet parents can keep forever, a one-of-a-kind artwork celebration of your special friend.
Based in Melbourne Australia, I have that written on my paint box, "don't forget the whiskers". It reminds me of the last thing I paint before a pet portrait is complete and to never to forget how my wonderful whippets Finn & Budd changed my life forever.
Keep reading for my story...
Art has been with me since the beginning.
Proudly presenting to my parents another painting, the joy of a new set of pencils or helping my mother decorate her classroom with illustrations from the books and animated movies I loved. Crafting, painting, sewing, drawing - there was always something in my imagination that I wanted to make.
Surrounded by ideas and stories and encouraged to create, I was a quiet kid with a fascination for animals. However, our life back then was not suited for a furry companion so I compensated with a large collection of soft toy characters that I could bring to life in my mind.
As I grew up this love of art and character developed. I discovered Japanese Manga and Anime and was exposed to famous artists - in particular I was drawn to the colour and energy of Pop Art.
Joining the "real world"
But for all my childhood dreaming, I had to join the real world eventually. I set my sights on a career where I could be creative, earn a living and explore the themes and ideas behind the Pop Art I love so much.. Advertising!
Within months of finishing my University degree I’d landed a job in marketing then after a few more years of hard work, I did it! I got my Advertising agency job.
Fast-paced, I worked with truly amazing people who taught me valuable life lessons and pushed me to be the best. It was exciting to be in the business of challenging the status quo. There was still a piece of me missing though..
Despite all the new ideas we brought to life, I did very few paintings over this time. I’d put in years of dedication, study and hard work to get here. Why wasn’t this everything I dreamed it would be?
Life changed when I MET Finn the Whippet.
Finn is the most special dog; he reconnected me with my love for animals. When my talented artist neighbour showed me her painting of her daughter’s dog and I was suddenly overcome with the desire to paint Finn’s portrait.
Not really sure how it was going to turn out, I started painting and painted his likeness in a bright, bold composition where his character was hero - a style that was a mash of Manga and Pop Art, a style that is everything I love about art and made me excited to paint more.
I realised that everything I learned in advertising could be applied to my dog portraits and I could spread the word to give others the opportunity to celebrate their own furry family members in art.
The missing piece of me had four paws and a wagging tail.
Pop Art Puppy Dogs was born.
My imagination was unleashed again.
As my pet portrait commissions gained momentum, I have learned the ability to trust in my talents. My lifelong love of animals and character enables me to hand-paint not just a pet's likeness, but also a pet’s spirit and personality in a way that is just as unique as they are.
Adding to my family by adopting another Whippet pup, Budd, soon after I followed my heart to make pets my whole world.
Now I’m painting dogs from all over the world, connecting with my fellow pet lovers, hanging out with my pups and painting Pop Art dog portraits for pet parents, just like me, who cherish the little furry souls that make our world a much more colourful place.
